Let me start off by saying that this is something I've struggled with it for the longest time! I was washing my hair every day because my roots were so oily and I could not last one day without washing them. I live in a dry climate so this didn't help the ends of my hair, they felt like straw! This is a common trend or issue with women's hair and I want to suggest a few different ideas that you should all try out and see how it solves your problem of oily roots and dry ends.

HAIR WASHING:
There could be so many things contributing to your oily roots and I bet you feel like you've tried everything! Like I mentioned before, I had oily roots every day and felt like my hair was so dirty if I didn't wash it every day. Then one day when I was at the hair salon, my stylist told me, "Don't wash your hair every day! Try going every few days!" Umm.. how was that going to help me?? But I did it and I could not believe how my hair changed.
When you wash your hair every day, it can dry out the hair, so your scalp reacts to the dry hair by producing more oils, which leaves you with that oily scalp and dry ends!
Here's how to help:
- Try and take breaks between hair washing days to give your scalp a break.
- Use a high-end shampoo and conditioner. Drug-store brands have wax in them which can cause a very oily scalp and does not good for cleaning it.
- When you wash your hair, shampoo TWICE. Redken 5th Avenue NYC suggests this, "Consider shampooing your hair twice before reaching for the conditioner. To get the best clean possible, it’s best to break down your shampooing routine into two stages. The first rinse will take care of major dirt and grime that has latched onto your hair, while the second rinse can help deep clean the hair."
- If you have fine or thin hair, find a lightweight shampoo.
This tip is going to be very beneficial to that oily scalp, but this isn't the only thing to combat it. Keep reading to find out some more helpful tips!

HAIR BRUSHING:

This next tip may seem a bit odd because most of us brush our hair every day anyways and may not notice a difference. However, celebrity hairstylist Vincent De Marco says, “Sebaceous glands located in your hair follicles produce natural oils that help lubricate your scalp,” he says. “When you brush your hair properly, it helps distribute these natural, healthy oils, from the roots of your hairs to the ends, giving them a natural shine". If you are struggling with an oily scalp AND dry ends this is an awesome way to disperse your hair's natural oils. Here's how to do it:
- Each night, grab a brush and comb through your hair from roots to ends. (This not only disperses the oils from your scalp and gives it some relief, but it also distributes those natural oils to the ends of your hair which do wonders for dry ends.)
- To distribute the oils best, section off your hair and brush along your scalp on different areas of your head. You will see incredible shine after taking just a few minutes to brush your hair each night.
- The best brush to use is a boar bristle brush because it doesn't absorb all of the oils but evenly disperses them throughout your hair.
- As an added bonus, brushing your hair can also stimulate hair growth.
DRY SHAMPOO & HAIR OIL:
Last, but definitely not least at tips for everyday hair health. If you are worried about taking breaks in between washing your hair, finding light and clean dry shampoo will be a lifesaver. It absorbs the oils and will allow you to manage going an extra day without washing it.
The one downside to dry shampoo is it can be a bit drying as it absorbs oils. So the best way to combat that is to use hair oil on the ends of your hair. My favorite oil is the MORROCANOIL leave-in treatment, you can find more details in my blog post "5 of The Best Leave-In Hair Treatments". Here are the best ways to apply these products:
- Find a lightweight and clean dry shampoo. Section off your hair and spray the dry shampoo a few inches away from the scalp and then massage into it.
- After spraying the dry shampoo all over your roots and massaging it in, take a dime-size amount of hair oil and rub it between your hands.
- Disperse the oil only through the ends of the hair to avoid adding more oil to the scalp. And you're done!
These tips are simple but so effective. If giving your hair back its health is something you desire, these provided tips are so easy and can create wonderful change in your overall hair health.
