SKIN TYPES
So what are all of the different kinds of skin types? WebMD explains that everyone's skin has a type and it is all due to genetics. Those skin types include normal, dry, oily, and combination skin. Every skin type needs products specific to that type, for example, if you have dry skin, using lots of exfoliating and stripping products is not going to be to your benefit for obvious reasons! Let's go into some more detail about each skin type.
Normal Skin:
Normal skin is the skin that is easiest to manage. The skin is not too dry and not too oily, but just right. Normal skin is the skin that most people want because it isn't as sensitive to new products, clear complexion, and has little to no imperfections.
Dry/Sensitive Skin:
Dry skin lacks moisture and is more common in dry or cold areas. This skin type tends to be more sensitive, may have noticeable dry or red patches, and is much more susceptible to cracking or peeling.
Oily Skin:
Oily skin is going to be a lot more noticeably shiny and tends to be accompanied by more blemishes because of all the oil buildup.
Combination Skin:
Combination skin is a combo of dry and oily skin. This means that your face may be oily in some spots and dry in others. This type of skin tends to be very common, but can also be more difficult to work with because it may require different care in different areas of your face.
PRODUCTS FOR EACH SKIN TYPE:
Now that you are aware of the different skin types, choose which type best fits you. Found it? Great! Now you're probably wondering, which products work for my skin type? Let's go over all of the different products that are included in all skin routines, and which kinds of products will work with your skin.
Cleansers: There are so many different cleansers on the market, but these are just a few common types that benefit different skin types.
- Gel Cleansers: These tend to be more lightweight cleansers that help with getting rid of any excess oil and dirt. Gel cleansers are best for those with oily skin.
- Cream Cleansers: Thicker consistency and feels like a combination of a cleanser and moisturizer. They are very gentle and are best for dry & sensitive skin types.
- Oil Cleansers: Yep, it's exactly like what it sounds. This cleanser is an oily consistency and believe it or not, it can actually be used for dry skin AND oily skin types because they do a wonderful job of cleaning out impurities and dirt on the skin.
- Foam Cleansers: Foam cleansers are very light and gentle cleansers and do a great job of cleaning the face for those with normal or combination skin. IF you feel like your skin doesn't need added moisture and doesn't have excess oil, foam cleansers are perfect.
Toners: The second step to the cleansing process. Toners help remove any extra dirt and oil from the skin.
- Hydrating Toners: These kinds of toners are the most gentle. Toners often times can dry out skin, so if you have dry to sensitive skin, finding a hydrating toner is very important.
- Exfoliating Toners: These toners really are like a second cleanser, and are great for getting out any extra impurities or dirt that was missed from your cleanser. These toners are best for oily, normal, and combination skin types.
Serums: Serums can sometimes be the most tricky products because there are so many different kinds to use, but it is one of the most important steps. FaceSerum.Com helps us narrow down the hundreds of serums into 6 different categories.
- Anti-Aging: Retinol, vitamin A, vitamin C, and AHA's.
- Brightening: Vitamin E and Vitamin C.
- Acne-Fighting: Salicylic acid, AHAs, BHAs, and glycolic acid.
- Hydrating: Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and vitamin E.
- Exfoliating: AHA's, glycolic acid, lactic acid, and retinol.
- Repairing: Usually include green tea, ceramides, retinol, and antioxidants.
Moisturizers/Creams: Moisturizers and night creams are an absolute must to any skincare routine, even for those with oily skin. Let's go over a few different kinds.
- Gel moisturizers: These moisturizers are the most lightweight and give the perfect amount of hydration without adding extra oil. This is best for oily and combination skin types.
- Cream Moisturizers: These moisturizers are the least lightweight and have a much thicker consistency. Cream moisturizers
- Lotion Moisturizers: a lotion or liquid moisturizer is usually the most common type of moisturizer that people use, and is lighter than a cream but thicker than gel. This is best for combination and normal skin types.

ROUTINE:
So... now you know what works for you! It may seem a bit overwhelming to see how many different products exist, but looking through this information will help you narrow down what types of products are going to help your skin. As far as what brands to use, sometimes it takes a little trial and error. Finally, here is the order that you'll want to apply and use the products.
- Cleanser (makeup remover first if you have makeup on): This is the first and most important step to removing all dirt and oil so that your remaining products can really penetrate the skin.
- Toner: Aids the cleanser in removing any leftover or excess dirt, makeup, or oil.
- Serum: This step is what will target your main skin concerns and will take your skin routine to the next level.
- Eye Cream: This product/step isn't listed above because it is not completely necessary. But if you struggle with dark and sleepy under your eyes, adding an eye cream can help.
- Moisturizer: The last step of your nightly routine is when you lock everything in and give your skin added hydration and moisture.
- Sunscreen/SPF (morning): Another product that was not listed above because most face SPF's are the same. But, this is a very important step in protecting your face from sun damage which can be very harsh on your skin.
