dry hair, shampoo and conditioner are

Everyone has different hair types and hair goals so a product that works for someone else may not work for you. This post is meant to explain and show the different types of shampoos and conditioners out there and which ones are best for each kind of hair.

Find a shampoo & conditioner that's right for YOU! I promise you'll find one here!

TYPES OF SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

There are tons of different kinds and shampoos and conditioners out there, but I am going to break them down into about 6 different types; moisturizing, volumizing, clarifying, anti-breakage, color-treated and curly. Below you will find a little bit more information on each kind and what they do.

Moisturizing/Hydrating:

This kind of shampoo and conditioner is exactly what it sounds like, it is moisturizing & hydrating! If you struggle with dry hair and feel that your hair is dull, it most likely is lacking moisture. So a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and going to give you that added moisture. It is important to note that if you have extremely fine hair, moisturizing shampoos can at times weigh thin hair down. This is just something to consider. Some great examples of hydrating and moisturizing shampoos are; MOROCCANOIL Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner, Pureology Hydrating Shampoo & conditioner, Redken All Soft Shampoo & conditioner, and Joico Moisture Recovery shampoo & conditioner.

Best For: Dry & coarse hair

Volumizing:

Like I mentioned earlier, moisturizing shampoos can often weigh down fine and thin hair. If you have thin and fine hair and can never manage to get it from sticking to your face and head, a volumizing shampoo will not weigh the hair down and will add natural height to your hair. Now, if you have extremely dry hair, this may not be the best option because these shampoos are lighter weight and won't give you your desired moisture. Some good volumizing shampoos and conditioners are Joico JoiFULL shampoo & conditioner, Kevin Murphy Plumping Wash, OUAI Fine Hair shampoo & conditioner, and Living Proof Full shampoo & conditioner.

Best For: Thin hair, fine hair, and oily hair.

Clarifying:

The next kind is usually only a shampoo, that is clarifying shampoos. Now for this specific type of shampoo, it is simply meant to get rid of excess buildup and oils. If you wash your hair only 1-2 times a week, you most likely have a lot of product buildup on your scalp that your normal shampoo might not be able to fully cleanse. Davines says,  "The catch is, clarifying shampoos can be harsh, so be sure to follow up with a conditioner and use it only once a week. While clarifying shampoo is safe to use, using it anymore can make your hair dry and frizzy". So, if you have really dry hair, it is probably best if you don't use a clarifying wash but make sure to wash your hair twice with your normal shampoo to help cleanse buildup. Some examples of good clarifying shampoos are, Unite Weekender Shampoo, Odele Clarifying Shampoo, Moroccanoil clarifying shampoo, and Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash.

Best For: Oily hair & normal hair types (used no more than once a week).

Anti-breakage:

Anti-breakage shampoo & conditioner is going to be an extreme moisturizing and hydrating shampoo. There is a difference between dry hair and damaged/broken hair. Hair that is damaged or broken from heat and chemicals needs extra moisture than dry hair. These shampoos are also great for those with long hair who wish to prevent it from breaking off at the ends, longer hair is much more delicate. Some wonderful examples of this type of product are Living Proof Restore, Bondi Boost Rapid Repair, Kerastase Resistance and, Aveda Botanical Repair.

Best For: Long hair, damaged/broken hair, or dry hair.

Color-treated:

Color-treated shampoo and conditioners are really only used and best for those who bleach or color their hair. These products will not only help maintain hair health from the chemicals used during coloring but will also help maintain the color and help it last longer! These shampoos and conditioners are usually very moisturizing because hair color and bleach are usually drying so shampoos and conditioners are going to add that moisture back in. Some good products include Amika Vault Color Lock, Redken Color Extend Magnetics, Pureology Serious Color Care, and Nexxus Color Assure.

Best For: Color-treated hair.

Curly/Anti-Frizz:

If you have curly hair, oftentimes certain shampoo and conditioners can change your curl patterns, causing your hair to be frizzy or flat. If you have straight hair, most shampoos are not going to alter the way your hair pattern looks. So your curly-haired people need a shampoo and conditioner that will enhance your beautiful, natural curls! Some great products for curly hair include Morrocanoil Curl Enhancing, Unite BOING Curl, Aveda Be Curly, and Verb Curl. Some Anti-frizz products include Pureology Smooth Perfection Anti-Frizz, Redken Frizz Dismiss, and Living Proof No Frizz.

Best For: Frizzy hair & Curly Hair.

Yes, that's a lot. You may be thinking, can shampoo and conditioner specific to my hair type really make a difference? The answer is yes! If you find the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair, it will be so much easier to manage and look the best it ever looked!
